On May 10th-12th Brunswick, Ohio’s Kaden Harter made his way to New Castle Motorsports Park for the opening round of the World Karting
Association’s 2013 Great Lakes Sprint Series. This would be his first time running Yamaha Junior Can at the famed track and his first time ever
practicing and racing the faster Komet Junior package on his Top Kart chassis’. Friday’s practice got off with cold temperatures as he
was getting a feel for the track in both Yamaha and KPP and settling in. That would be short lived, as after just four rounds of practice the skies
opened up and heavy rain came for a few hours ending his chance of getting any more dry practice for the day.
Saturday morning was even a bit cooler than the day before but at least it was dry. The previous day’s rain had made the track green once again after for early morning rounds of practice. Qualifying was next and he after three laps he put his Comet Racing Engines powered Yamaha KT100 on the starting grid in P3 and his KPP in P6. In the Pre-finals there was some great racing action but he would end up falling back a couple spots in Yamaha (finishing P6) but gaining a few spots in KPP (finishing 3rd). In the Saturday finals he would battle to the very end and finish the day 5th in Yamaha and 3rd in KPP.
Sunday was a much warmer day and as qualifying got under way he went out and put his Yamaha on the pole by .3 of a second and qualified 3rd in KPP. Losing some spots on the start of the Yamaha pre-final he ended up coming across the finish line 4th in Yamaha and 3rd in KPP. The feature events had him laying down some very quick lap times in Yamaha but soon mechanical problems in the drive train would trouble him and he would go from 3rd back to 7th before the checkered flag flew. In KPP he got off to a slow start due to some green flag turn one contact allowing the leader to put 20 karts on the field. He came back and was gaining .2 tenths a lap on the leader but ran out of laps and came across the finish line less than a half a second behind the winner. He would also was awarded the “Zero Error Racing” fast lap of the entire weekend award for KPP during the podium presentations.
